Но если собеседник ответит что-то большее, чем простое указание пальцем, например, «Take the second right, then go straight past the fountain and you’ll see the entrance» (Поверните вторым поворотом направо, пройдите прямо мимо фонтана, и вы увидите вход), — есть риск не понять его. Tatiana's Day and Russian Students' Day

January 25 is called Tatiana's Day, a day to honor Saint Tatiana of Rome. During a time of harsh persecution of Christians, people try to make her leave the faith, but she stays strong. Authorities execute her on January 25 in the year 226, and this day becomes a Christian holiday symbolizing strong faith.

This date is also Russian Students' Day. The reason is the opening of Moscow University. On this day in 1755, Empress Elizabeth signs a decree to establish the university. Later, a small church dedicated to Saint Tatiana is built at the university, and she becomes the patron saint of all Russian students.

The day officially becomes a national student holiday in 1850 under Emperor Nicholas I. He orders the celebration of January 25 as the day of all higher education institutions in the country.

The creation of this early map is connected to a man named Dmitry Gerasimov. He is a translator and diplomat in the 16th century. Starting in 1525, he works in Rome as an ambassador to Pope Clement VII.

There, he meets a famous Italian historian and writer, Paolo Giovio. Giovio writes a book called "The Book on the Muscovite Embassy." He writes this book based on stories and information from Gerasimov. Gerasimov's knowledge and experience also help to create this important map of Moscow.

When Peter returns home, he decides to create a similar collection in Russia. On January 31, 1714, he establishes the "State Cabinet," or Kunstkamera, in the Summer Palace of St. Petersburg. Today, it is one of the oldest museums in Russia.

By 1718, the collection of exhibits becomes very large. The tsar orders the construction of a new, separate building for it. After Peter's death, the Kunstkamera moves to a new building on Vasilievsky Island.

Today, the Kunstkamera is the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, part of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Birthday of the Iron

Tools for smoothing clothes are very old. In the 4th century BC, in Ancient Greece, people use a hot metal rod, similar to a rolling pin, to smooth linen clothes. In ancient times, people also use slightly worked, heated stones for this task.

In medieval Russia, before the iron appears, people also smooth fabric. One method uses a frying pan heated on hot coals. Another tool is called a "rubel". This is a wooden rolling pin and a ribbed board. They wrap clothes around the rolling pin and roll the board over it to make it smooth.

The first written mention of a true iron is in the record book of the Tsar's court. The entry is dated February 10, 1636. This early iron weighs about 10 kilograms and is made from one solid piece of cast iron.

This document says that women and girls of all ages must have equal access to science, technology, and innovation. It says that gender equality in this field is very important.

Two years later, the General Assembly holds another meeting. The members adopt a new resolution. This resolution proclaims February 11 as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

However, after five days, the supply of penicillin runs out. The amount is too small to cure him completely. The infection returns, and the patient dies. But this case proves an important fact: penicillin has a positive effect and can fight a blood infection.

A few months later, scientists manage to collect a sufficient amount of penicillin. This time, they save a 15-year-old boy from the same dangerous disease. This is the first successful treatment with penicillin.

"Yes," says the woman. "Take off your hat. Let me see your hair."

Della takes off her hat. Her beautiful hair falls down.

"I will give you twenty dollars for it," says the woman.

"Yes. Cut it, please" says Della.

An hour later, Della has short, curly hair. In her hand, she has twenty-one dollars and eighty-seven cents. Now she can buy a gift!

She looks for a special gift in many shops. Finally, she finds it: a perfect silver chain for Jim's gold watch. It is simple and strong. It costs twenty-one dollars. She buys it. She is very happy. Now Jim can look at his watch every time. The chain is beautiful.

At home, Della is nervous. "Will Jim like me with short hair?" she thinks. She makes coffee and waits.

Jim comes home. He looks at Della. His face is strange. He does not show anger or surprise. He just looks.

"Della," he says. "Your hair..."

"I sold my hair," says Della quickly. "I wanted to buy you a Christmas gift. Don't be angry. My hair grows fast. Now, I have a wonderful gift for you!"

Jim puts his hands on his head. "You cut your hair?" he says slowly. He smiles a sad smile. "My dear Della. Nothing can change my love for you. But look at this." He gives her a small box.

Della opens it. Two beautiful hair combs are inside it. They are the same color as her old hair. She wanted these combs for a long time. Now they are hers... but she has no hair for them. She holds them to her heart.

"Oh, Jim! They are perfect! But my hair is short now. It's okay! I love them! And now, open my gift!"

She gives him a small box. Jim opens it. He sees the silver chain. He sits down on the sofa and smiles.

"Della," he says. "I sold my watch to buy your combs."

And so, they have two beautiful gifts, but no hair and no watch. But they have something more important. They have great love for each other. And that is the best gift of all.

The Nightingale agreed. That evening, she began to sing. She sang about love. She pressed her heart against the thorn. The thorn went into her heart. It hurt very much, but she did not stop.

All night she sang. The cold moon listened to her. The red rose began to grow on the tree.

First it was white. But as the Nightingale's blood went into the tree, the rose became redder. Red like the sky in the morning. Red like a ruby.

But the Nightingale's song became weaker. Her little wings stopped moving. She gave one last, beautiful cry, and died.

The next morning, the student opened his window.

"Look!" he said. "A perfect red rose!" He took it happily. He ran to the professor's daughter.

"Here is the red rose you wanted," he said. "Now you will dance with me."

But the girl looked at the rose and frowned.

"I am afraid it will not match my new dress," she said. "And the Chamberlain's nephew sent me real jewels. Jewels are better than flowers."

The student was very angry. He threw the red rose into the street. A cart went over it.

"Love is a silly thing," he said. "It is not logical. I will go back to my books and my philosophy." And he walked away.

But the Nightingale knew the true meaning of love. She gave her life for it. And in the street, under the wheel of the cart, the red rose was dead.

"But you must know something," said the old man. His voice was quiet. "This potion is very strong. It is permanent."

"Permanent? What does that mean?"

"It means forever," said the old man. "The girl will love you. She will only think about you. She will want to be with you every minute of every day. She will be a little jealous. She will think the world begins and ends with you, Alan Austen."

"That is perfect!" said Alan. "That is exactly what I want!"

"Are you sure?" asked the old man. "It is a very serious thing."

"I am sure. Here is your dollar." Alan gave him the money.

The old man took the dollar slowly. "My young friend," he said. "Customers come back to me. First, they buy this cheap love potion. Later, they need other things. More expensive things."

Alan laughed. "I will not need anything else! If Diana loves me, I will be the happiest man in the world!"

The old man looked at him. "Yes, you will be very happy. But one day, maybe in a year, maybe in five years, you will want to... live your life again. You will want to travel, see your friends, be alone sometimes. But she will always be there. She will love you too much. Then you will come back to me."

Alan did not believe him. "What will I need then?"

The old man pointed to another shelf. There was a small, clean bottle with a white label. It looked expensive.

"That," said the old man, "is called a life-cleaner. Some people call it a 'chaser.' It cleans everything. The price is very high."

Alan smiled. He was thinking only about Diana's love. He held the small dirty bottle carefully.

"I will not need your life-cleaner," he said. "Good evening."

"Good evening," said the old man. "But I will be here. And the life-cleaner... will be here too. It costs five thousand dollars."

Alan walked out into the street. He was very happy. He did not think about the future. He thought only about Diana. He did not look back.

The next day, Mr. Martin went to work early. He acted normal again. He was quiet and careful.

Later, Mrs. Barrows ran into the boss's office.

"Mr. Fitweiler!" she shouted. "Mr. Martin is crazy! He came to my home! He smoked! He talked about horses and soda machines! He wears terrible ties!"

Mr. Fitweiler, the boss, looked at her. He knew Mr. Martin for twenty years. Mr. Martin was the most normal person in the company. He never smoked. He hated loud ties.

That afternoon, Mrs. Barrows left the company forever.

They arrived. The air was strange and warm. The plants were giant. The path was a metal walkway above the mud.

In the distance, they saw the T-Rex. It was enormous. It had terrible teeth. Its eyes were like mirrors.

Eckels looked at it. His face became white. "I can't shoot it," he said. He was terrified.

He stepped off the metal path. He ran back to the Time Machine. His shoes were dirty with ancient mud.

The other men shot the dinosaur. It fell and died.

Travis was very angry. "You fool! You stepped off the path!" he shouted at Eckels.

Eckels looked down at his shoes. There was mud on them. And in the mud... a dead butterfly. A very small, beautiful, green and gold butterfly.

They returned to the Machine. They went back to the year 2055.

But something was wrong.

The air smelled different. The colors on the walls were strange. The sign on the wall had different words. The man behind the desk was not the same man.

Eckels looked at his shoe. It was clean now. The butterfly was gone from the mud. But it was too late. He killed it 60 million years ago.

That small change changed everything. The world was not the same. The language was different. A different, cruel man was the President.

Travis looked at Eckels. He took his gun.

"A small thing," whispered Eckels. "Just a butterfly..."

"Yes," said Travis. He raised his gun. "But that small thing... made a very big sound in time. A sound of thunder."

The sound of a gun filled the room.

The success of the comedy "Kidnapping, Caucasian Style" is truly huge. In 1967, 76 million Soviet viewers watch it. This is first place for the year and fourth place in the entire history of Soviet film distribution.
